The use of file extension NB in Mathematic Notebook is slightly different from what you would expect it to carry out in Nota Bene Document file or WordPerfect Notebook. Its role here is usually limited to the provision of an environment that is conducive to the carrying out of computing tasks. With NB files one can manage a wide range of data and manipulate it using different computing tasks. It also enables the performance of complex programming tasks on data that is consequently sent to clients or colleagues. Simple calculations are also enabled for short processes.

Cannot open nb files?

Not being able to open nb files may be the result of not having the appropriate application installed or Operating System issues. You should ensure

1. The appropriate program is installed
2. Check your Operating System for invalid registry entries and other speed issues.

One requires installing any of the three programs before they can mange NB files. Each of the application can open the files they are individually responsible for making. If one is working with Mathematica Notebook, for instance, they will require to open and mange NB file using Wolfram Research Mathematica. This will be applicable on either Mac OS or any version of Windows. In addition they could open the same NB file using any appropriate text editor. The same is applicable to user who working on Linux driven computers. However, one must remember the location of the NB files as it will help them remember the application with which it was developed.
